Jessica Heng, Lynette Quek and Bambby Cheuk
Approx. 60–90min
Starting point: Outside Maxwell Food Centre, facing junction of Tanjong Pagar Road and Maxwell Road
The 1950s and 1960s marked the peak of Singapore’s golden age of cinema, with Tanjong Pagar housing vibrant narratives of film culture. “A Ticket through Time,” the third episode in Speaking of which—The Everyday Museum’s series of self-guided audio trails—takes listeners on an immersive journey through the neighbourhood’s cinematic heritage. Led by Hannah, a time-travelling protagonist, this episode combines documentary and narrative styles to reimagine the scenography of Tanjong Pagar in the past.
The experience begins at the bustling Metropole Theatre, once situated at the intersection of Tanjong Pagar and Maxwell Roads. From across the road, listeners will get a view of the theatre’s historic building, now home to Fairfield Methodist Church. From there, they will stroll down Tanjong Pagar Road to Tras Link Park, uncovering cultural relics such as Gay Yau Studio on Choon Guan Street where artists crafted hand-painted billboards for the cinema. The journey ends at Tanjong Pagar Community Club, as we look at alternative forms of entertainment that communities engaged in.
Directed by filmmaker Jessica Heng, produced by Bambby Cheuk, and with sound design by Lynette Quek, this audio experience invites reflection on how the evolution of Singapore’s entertainment industry mirrors the country’s socio-cultural changes.
Speaking of which is commissioned by The Everyday Museum in partnership with the National Archives of Singapore.
